Q. What is physical therapy?
A. Physical Therapists apply research and proven techniques through a combination of therapeutic exercise and activities neuromuscular reeducation, and modalities (which include hot/cold therapy, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, massage and joint mobilization). These treatments help the body rehabilitate from injury, surgery, and disease processes; as well as treat and/or prevent re-injury or further degeneration. Physical Therapists examine, diagnose, and then treat and/or prevent conditions that limit the body’s ability to move and function in daily life.
Q. What kind of education does a Physical Therapist have?
A. Physical Therapists are health care specialists that have received university educations with graduate degrees from accredited programs. They must pass a licensure exam that allows them to practice physical therapy. State licensure is required. Physical Therapists then provide care for diverse populations, everyone from small children and young athletes to senior citizens. Therapists diagnose and treat for medical problems and other physical problems that keep patients from performing daily functional activities and/or limit their ability to move their bodies freely and without pain. The Physical Therapist examines each patient to determine what exercises and activities or modalities will benefit them most effectively to regain strength and mobility or decrease pain. Therapists develop plans for patients to follow during treatment and after discharge to help them avoid future problems. A Physical Therapist’s goal is to promote wellness, restore function, reduce pain, prevent disability, prevent the loss of mobility, and avoid recurrence.
Q. Why seek the services of a Physical Therapist?
A. The main purpose of a Physical Therapist is to help his/her patient return to full active function as soon as possible and we work to help the patient avoid surgery. Patients often seek the services of physical therapy after surgery, a broken bone, arthritis, muscle spasms, nerve injury, and soft tissue trauma.

Q. Do I have to have a doctor’s prescription for physical therapy?
A. In Arizona you may make an appointment with a therapist directly without a physician’s prescription.
Q. My doctor gave me a prescription for physical therapy with a specific clinic named on the prescription. Do I have to go there?
A. No, legally you may go wherever you want to go. You may also be directed by your insurance plan to a physical therapy facility. Sometimes physicians have a financial interest in specific clinics and that may be why they specify a particular clinic. Your physician is obligated to disclose this information to you but he may or may not. You may go to any provider you choose, be sure to check with your insurance carrier about your plan and coverage.
Q. How do I make an appointment?
A. Call our office at 623-974-1797 and speak to our receptionist. She will walk you thru the process including information about you particular insurance company coverage. This important information will avoid financial problems from occurring. You may fill out our required paperwork before you come in. Go Here. Q. Can Physical Therapy help me avoid surgery?
A. Many conditions can be successfully treated without expensive, risky, and painful surgery. Surgery does not have to be your first course of action. We have helped many people avoid surgery.
Q. What problems do you treat?
A. We treat a wide variety of conditions and problems. Arthritis pain, TMJ, hip and back pain, neck pain, pain of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist, general weakness, balance problems, knee and ankle pain and weakness, bad posture, total joint replacements, gait problems, and artificial limbs. Physical therapy can help improve your mobility and quality of life with less dependence on medication.

Q. What will my first visit be like?
A. At Valley Rehabilitation we practice in an outpatient clinic, five days a week, making every effort to accommodate our patients’ schedules. The Physical Therapist will visit with the patient and evaluate their condition by conducting tests of strength, motion, and functional skills. If the patient has a prescription from a physician, it will be reviewed and discussed. The PT will then decide on a treatment plan to achieve the patient’s goals. The PT and patient will work together to meet those goals.
Q. Will treatment hurt?
A. Our goal is to decrease pain; however there may be some discomfort at the beginning of treatment as your body is challenged to increase in strength and joint movement. Please let the PT know of any increase or decrease in pain and your therapy session will be adjusted as necessary.
Q. How much does it cost?
A. We accept assignment from most insurance companies, (please see our list of insurance carriers below). It is your responsibility to understand the benefits offered by your personal insurance company. We will contact your insurance company to verify benefits before you begin treatment and check benefits; however, there are occasions where the insurance company will give us inaccurate information over the phone. It is the patient’s responsibility to provide all insurance information at the first visit. You will be responsible for any deductibles or other costs associated with your plan. We accept workman’s compensation plans, personal injury accident cases with a signed lien, and cash payments.
Q. How should I dress for my first appointment?
A. You should dress casually and comfortably, you should be able to move freely. Most patients prefer to wear exercise clothing and athletic shoes. Wear shorts for treatment of leg or foot problems. Wear a tank top for neck and shoulder problems. Call if you have any other questions.
